Write the message you want to encode

1. Choose Text or link. Select Text or link and enter a short note in Text or URL, such as “Return this item to the front desk.” You can also copy words from a document you control.
2. Check the exact wording. Name the desk or room. Check punctuation and line breaks. The tool trims leading and trailing whitespace, then stores the remaining text; it does not add a TEXT: prefix or turn the note into a hosted page.
3. Keep the label practical. Short messages make simpler patterns. For longer instructions that change often, publish them elsewhere and use Text or link to link that page.
4. Test with a text-capable reader. Download the image and decode it using a scanner that displays raw text. Compare the result with your original message, including line breaks. If offline use matters, repeat the check with the reader's network connection off before printing labels.

An equipment label

On borrowed equipment, name the building and desk in your return note. Put “Return instructions” beside the QR and print the key words in ordinary text too, for people without a suitable scanner.

Try one label on the item. Avoid curved or scratched surfaces. Choose a flat area with space for the square and its blank border. Check the words before making a batch.

What is stored, and what can change

The QR contains the message itself, not a link, redirect, or file stored on our site. Your entered words stay in this browser while you create and download the image. Our code never expires. A saved copy does not depend on a profile, page, login, or this generator remaining online.

You cannot edit the words inside an already printed image. If the front desk moves or the instruction changes, create a new code and replace the labels. Deleting a draft or closing an account cannot remove encoded text. Replace outdated labels.

Scanner support and privacy

Text display varies by scanner. Apple and Google's camera guides describe detected links; they do not promise that iPhone Camera or every Android Camera will show arbitrary plain text. Google ML Kit documents local decoding and plain-text data; ZXing explains how readers interpret content. These support using a suitable text reader, without promising a particular camera screen.

If a phone offers no useful action, try a reader that explicitly supports plain-text QR data. Display and copy options depend on the reader. Test the one your audience uses. Making the image needs no separate app; reading it may.

There is no private-account protection around the encoded message. Anyone who has the image or photographs the label can decode its contents. Avoid passwords, confidential notes, and personal details you do not intend to share. The image is not encrypted, and a scanner's own data practices are separate from this generator's browser-only processing.

Print and troubleshoot

Start at least 2 cm / 0.8 in wide, with dark squares on a light background. Leave the quiet margin clear of text and edges. Use SVG to scale in a print layout or PNG at a suitable pixel size. Enlarge dense patterns and test before printing many.

If decoding fails, check sharpness, lighting, and the full square. If the reader shows the wrong words, compare them with the field and make a new image. If nothing appears despite a clear code, check the reader's text support before changing the message.
