HUD — Retrofits & Adaptations: Improving Mobility in the Home — June 2024 report; 2018 USD, Western New York; Exhibit A-2, printed p. 66; Amico Home ImprovementMeasure the entrance rise in inches and calculate the minimum horizontal run. Read the dimension references and check the layout with your local building department. Historical cost cards describe separate documented scopes and never price the calculated run.
The 2010 ADA Standards §405.2 base rule uses a maximum running slope of 1:12 rise to horizontal run. Multiply rise in inches by 12 for minimum run in inches; the run in feet equals rise in inches. This calculation excludes landings and door maneuvering space. US DOJ 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
The 2010 ADA Standards specify 36 inches minimum clear width (§405.5), 30 inches maximum rise per run (§405.6), a 60-inch minimum landing length with width at least the widest connecting run (§§405.7.2–3), and 60 × 60 inches at direction changes (§405.7.4). Handrails are required for more than 6 inches rise (§405.8). US DOJ 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
This is a planning guide, not a code inspection. Ordinary private single-family homes are not automatically subject to ADA provisions. Check the local building department and applicable local/program requirements; site layout can require multiple runs and landings. US DOJ 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
