Worked minutes = end minutes − start minutes + (1440 if end is next day) − unpaid break minutes. Decimal hours = worked minutes / 60. H:MM = whole hours and remaining minutes. Weekly minutes = sum of shift minutes. Optional overtime = max(0, total minutes − 2400); regular minutes = total − overtime.

NIST SP 811, Table 6 defines 1 h = 60 min. The U.S. Department of Labor explains the 40-hour workweek threshold. This optional split is arithmetic and does not determine overtime eligibility or pay.

Worked example: Five shifts of 09:00–18:30 with a 30-minute break give 45:00 (45 h). With the 40-hour split selected, regular = 40:00 and overtime = 5:00.

Use these seven rows for one workweek. Blank days are skipped; partially completed days must be finished. Inputs are clock times without dates or time zones, so daylight-saving changes are not adjusted. For one shift, use the Hours Calculator.

How to use this tool

Fill in the days you worked; leave unused days blank. Set overnight and unpaid break minutes for each shift. Select the optional 40-hour split, then Calculate.

Frequently asked questions

How do overnight shifts work?

Select End is next day when a shift crosses midnight. Equal start and end times count as zero hours, or 24 hours with End is next day selected. Each shift is limited to 24 hours.

Does this calculate overtime pay?

No. The optional split shows minutes past 40 hours and the remaining minutes. It does not decide overtime eligibility, daily overtime rules, or a pay rate.

Are daily decimal hours rounded before adding?

No. Each shift is calculated in whole minutes and those minutes are added before decimal display rounding. A blank row is skipped, but a partially filled row needs both clock times.
