Worked minutes = end minutes − start minutes + (1440 if end is next day) − unpaid break minutes. Decimal hours = worked minutes / 60. H:MM = whole hours and remaining minutes.
NIST SP 811, Table 6 defines 1 h = 60 min. Enter only breaks you intend to exclude; U.S. Department of Labor break guidance distinguishes rest breaks and meal periods.
Worked example: 09:00 to 17:00 minus a 30-minute break = 450 minutes = 7.5 h = 7:30. 22:00 to 06:00 next day with the same break also gives 7:30.
Clock-time arithmetic assumes each day has 24 hours and does not adjust for daylight-saving changes. Each shift may be up to 24 hours. For a full week, use the Time Card Calculator.
How to use this tool
Enter start and end times in 24-hour format. For a shift crossing midnight, select End is next day. Enter unpaid break minutes, then select Calculate.
Frequently asked questions
How do overnight shifts work?
Select End is next day when a shift crosses midnight. Equal start and end times count as zero hours, or 24 hours with End is next day selected. Each shift is limited to 24 hours.
Is 7:30 the same as 7.30 hours?
No. 7:30 means 7 hours and 30 minutes, which is 7.5 decimal hours. Decimal results display four places; totals use the original whole minutes.
Which breaks should I enter?
Enter only the break minutes you intend to exclude. This is time arithmetic and does not decide whether a break is paid. Dates, time zones and daylight-saving changes are not part of these clock-time inputs.
