Furnace Age Calculator
Estimate manufacture age from a verified date or supported serial format. Compare your own repair and replacement quotes and read separate dated service-life and replacement references.
How to use this tool
Confirm your model’s serial format and century with the maker or dealer, or enter a maker-confirmed manufacture date. Select the as-of date. Add both comparable quotes for the repair comparison. Press Calculate estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my furnace age?
Read the rating plate and confirm the model and serial format with the maker or dealer. Lennox’s legacy diagram encodes year and month; Nordyne’s furnace library verifies year at characters 4–5 and month at 6–7. Rheem’s 2018 parts literature shows plant-letter week/year layouts before and after November 2013. A two-digit year needs a confirmed century. Lennox Model and Serial Nomenclature (publication year not printed). Nordyne M7RL furnace literature library (undated; checked 2026). Rheem GF801D Replacement Parts (2018).
Does a furnace serial number tell me its installation date?
The supported formats encode manufacture date, not installation date. Month and production-week precision cannot establish an exact day. Confirm ambiguous formats, centuries and the Rheem transition with the maker or dealer. Lennox Model and Serial Nomenclature (publication year not printed). Rheem GF801D Replacement Parts (2018). Nordyne M7RL furnace literature library (undated; checked 2026).
How long does a furnace last?
NAHB’s 2007 study gives 15–20 years; InterNACHI’s undated chart gives 15–25 years. These are separate service-life guidance ranges, not warranties or remaining-life predictions. EPA ENERGY STAR’s undated guidance says to consider replacement when a furnace is over 15 years old. NAHB Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components (2007). InterNACHI Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart (undated; checked 2026). EPA ENERGY STAR: When is it time to replace? (undated; checked 2026).
Should I repair or replace my furnace?
DOE’s 2011 guidance advises considering replacement if repair costs more than 50% of replacement, taking age and condition into account. Enter your own comparable repair and replacement quotes. Age does not independently set a dollar cutoff. DOE Building America: Energy Renovations—HVAC (2011).
What does furnace replacement cost?
DOE’s 2011 historical combustion-furnace retrofit band is $2,000–$10,000 installed, excluding distribution addition/repair. Typical: get a local quote. DOE’s 2023 rulemaking models installed means of $3,947 at 92% AFUE, $3,962 at 95%, and $4,156 at 98%, in 2022 dollars. These are modeled scenarios, not observed current local prices; do not add venting/drain costs again. DOE Building America: Energy Renovations—HVAC (2011). DOE Consumer Furnaces Final Rule (2023; modeled means in 2022 dollars).
