EV Charger Installation Cost Planner

Electrical safety first

Electrical work needs a licensed electrician and usually a permit; confirm local requirements and arrange inspection. Circuit capacity and wire selection need an on-site assessment. Do not open or modify your panel yourself.

If omitted, the credit follows the after-June-30-2026 rule.

A panel label alone cannot decide an upgrade or price the job.

Routed length, not straight-line distance; wire size and cost need an electrician's design.

Frequently asked questions

What does EV charger installation cost?

DTE’s January 11, 2024 filing reports $750 lowest and $7,850 highest, including the charger, from over 600 completed Michigan home pilot jobs. Its separate $2,400 single-family Level 2 planning assumption for 2025–2028 includes utility make-ready $230, customer make-ready $1,580 and charger $590: a planning figure, not the middle of those jobs. Utility and DOE figures are separate references, not a price for your home. DTE Electric Transportation Electrification Plan, MPSC filing.

What size breaker for an EV charger?

Multiply the charger’s rated or installer-set maximum current by 1.25 for the preliminary dedicated-circuit minimum. A 48 A charger needs at least 60 A; 30 A gives 37.5 A. The electrician picks an equipment-compatible size. California HCAI’s 2022 Electrical Guide, revised May 8, 2023, corroborates the 125% continuous-load factor; it is not a home permit specification. DOE AFDC gives the NEC Article 625 basis. California HCAI — 2022 Electrical Guide, printed p. 26.

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

A panel label alone cannot decide an upgrade or price the job. A blank breaker slot does not prove spare capacity. An electrician’s load calculation and compatible breaker space decide the assessment. Insufficient assessed capacity may need an upgrade, approved load management or reduced current; no room for a breaker needs a layout assessment. Enough assessed capacity and compatible space mean an upgrade appears unnecessary for that configuration. DOE AFDC — Charging Electric Vehicles at Home.

Does a Level 2 charger need a 240 V circuit?

DOE AFDC says Level 2 uses 240 V. Circuit capacity and wire selection need an electrician’s on-site assessment. For Level 1, $0 additional installation applies only when a suitable dedicated circuit and a charging cord you own are already there; buying equipment or fixing the circuit is excluded. DOE AFDC — Charging Electric Vehicles at Home.

Can I get the EV charger tax credit in 2026?

The federal 30C credit ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026; the 2025 law moved the end from December 31, 2032. For January 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026, a main home in an eligible census tract may qualify for 30% of qualifying cost, up to $1,000 per item, subject to other IRS rules. Ordering or a deposit by the deadline does not count. An omitted date follows the after-June-30 rule. No credit is subtracted from a reference figure. IRS — Form 8911 instructions.

Is this EV charger installation planner free?

Yes. Copy and print without an account. Web and MCP share 20 free calls per IP per UTC day and a global ceiling of 2,000; no separate tool cap. Extras remain unpriced. Routed length is not straight-line distance; wire size and cost need an electrician’s design. Use DOE AFDC’s laws and incentives search for state and utility programs.
