Result
Tip = bill × tip% / 100, rounded to the nearest cent (half up). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total / people, rounded up to a cent, or to a whole dollar when selected. Extra = people × per person − total.
NIST SP 811, section 7.10.2 defines % as 0.01. The splitting and rounding rules are the calculator conventions shown above.
Worked example: $100 with an 18% tip gives an $18 tip and $118 total. Three people pay $39.34 each, collecting $118.02. Whole-dollar rounding gives $40 each, collecting $120 with $2 extra.
Amounts use USD and two decimal places. Enter the bill base you want to tip on; tax and existing service charges are not added automatically. Extra collected from rounding is shown separately and included in the final tip if paid to the server. Bill and tip percentage each accept at most two decimal places.
How to use this tool
Enter the bill in dollars, tip percentage and number of people. Choose optional rounding to whole dollars per person, then Calculate. The bill is the base you enter.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tip before or after tax?
The calculator applies the percentage to the bill amount you enter. Enter a pre-tax or post-tax amount according to the base you want to use; it does not add tax or service charges.
What does round up per person mean?
Each equal share rounds up to a whole dollar when selected. Otherwise each share rounds up to a cent so the group covers the total. Any extra collected is displayed separately.
Is the displayed tip a recommendation?
No. You choose the tip percentage. The calculator shows the requested tip, bill total, per-person share, extra from rounding, and final tip including that extra.
