Total daily energy expenditure
W = weight in kg, H = height in cm, A = age in years. Mifflin–St Jeor: 10W + 6.25H − 5A + 5 (male), or −161 instead of +5 (female). Mifflin et al., 1990.
Revised Harris–Benedict: 13.397W + 4.799H − 5.677A + 88.362 (male); 9.247W + 3.098H − 4.330A + 447.593 (female). Roza and Shizgal, 1984.
Katch–McArdle: 370 + 21.6 × W × (1 − body fat % / 100). See the equation used in this primary study of resting energy in weightlifters. An inaccurate body fat estimate affects the result.
Daily calories (TDEE) ≈ resting energy × activity factor. The factors are common calculator conventions, not part of the original resting-energy equations. Treat the result as a starting estimate; actual needs vary.
Worked example
A 30-year-old male, 80 kg and 180 cm, has Mifflin–St Jeor resting energy of 10 × 80 + 6.25 × 180 − 5 × 30 + 5 = 1,780 kcal/day. At moderate activity (1.55), estimated TDEE = 1,780 × 1.55 = 2,759 kcal/day.

Frequently asked questions
What is TDEE?
Total daily energy expenditure estimates energy used across a day. Here it is resting energy multiplied by the selected activity factor.
How should I pick activity?
The five labels and multipliers are approximate conventions. They are not part of the original resting-energy studies and do not measure your actual energy use.
Can I use imperial units?
Yes. Choose pounds, whole feet and additional inches. Measurements are converted to kilograms and centimetres for the formulas.
