Scientific Notation Calculator
Free, with no sign up. Calculations run on your device; your entries stay in this browser.
Enter up to 200 decimal digits, optionally with an exponent from −200 to 200: for example -1.234e5. Strings and BigInt preserve the exact value. Trailing zeros are removed from the normalized coefficient; they do not imply measured precision or significant figures. Zero is shown as 0 × 10^0. Output can extend to 400 decimal places for the smallest accepted values. No commas or multiplication symbols in input.
Your result
x = coefficient × 10^exponent, with 1 ≤ |coefficient| < 10 for nonzero x. Move the decimal point to follow the first nonzero digit and adjust the exponent by the same number of places. Expansion reverses that shift without rounding.

Worked example
0.00012 = 1.2 × 10^−4. Expanding -1.234e5 gives -123400 exactly. The value 9007199254740993 remains exact here even though binary floating-point would lose a digit.
How to use this tool
Enter a decimal string or e notation. Choose normalize or expand and Calculate.
Frequently asked questions
Does this preserve large integers?
Yes. The conversion uses decimal strings and BigInt, without converting the entered value to a binary floating-point number.
Does removing zeros change measured precision?
This tool formats numerical value only. It does not infer or preserve measurement precision or significant-figure metadata.
Is this free and private?
Yes. These calculations run in your browser, without sign-up or uploading your entries.
