Does my text leave my device?
No. Your text never leaves the device. All counts run in your browser, with nothing uploaded or saved by this tool.
How are words and characters counted?
Words use your browser’s language-aware segmentation when available, including for languages without spaces. Hyphenated words may count separately. Older browsers count groups of Unicode letters or numbers, keeping contractions and hyphenated words together. Punctuation alone does not count. Characters count Unicode code points; a combined emoji may contain several.
How are sentences and paragraphs counted?
Sentences use your browser’s language-aware segmentation when available; a segment must contain a letter or number to count. Older browsers split on periods, question marks and exclamation marks, including Chinese and Japanese forms. A final unfinished sentence also counts. Paragraphs are nonempty blocks separated by blank lines. Abbreviations can inflate sentence counts, as can decimals in older browsers.
How are reading and speaking times estimated?
Reading time uses 238 words per minute and speaking time uses 150 words per minute, rounded up to the next second. These are estimates; your pace may vary.
